I always use Onion chutney as a replacement for Coconut chutney for dosa, idli, as it is lesser in cholesterol than Coconut Chutney. And trust me, it blends very well with them!! Try it, I'm sure you wont regret it :)
Ingredients:
1 extra-large Onion chopped
3-4 Green Chillies
1/2 tsp Chana Dal
1/2 tsp Urad Dal
2-3 Red Chillies
Tamarind Paste - 1tbsp
Jaggery - 1 big tbsp
Salt to taste
Method:
1. In heated oil, add green chillies, red chillies, Chana dal and Urad Dal
2. After the dals brown slightly, add the Onions. Do not add any water. Instead cover and cook. The onions will cook in their own water.
3. Add salt to taste.
4. Once the onions are cooked, take off from heat, and let it cool for about 15 minutes.
5. Once cooled, mix in the tamarind paste and jaggery, and grind to a fine paste.
6. Make Voggarane (Tadka) in little oil using Mustard, Hing and 1-2 Red Chillies.
Onion Chutney ready.
